Best MREs for Camping and Outdoor Adventures

MREs can be a practical option for camping and outdoor use because they are shelf-stable, portable, and designed to be eaten without normal kitchen access. The right setup depends on trip length, group size, pack weight, water availability, and whether you care about choosing a specific menu.

Why campers use MREs

  • No refrigeration required: useful for campsites, vehicle kits, hunting trips, and remote work.
  • Ready to eat: the food can be eaten without cooking, although many people prefer heating the entrée.
  • Self-contained: individual meals are easy to portion and distribute.
  • Menu variety: current U.S. MRE menu groups cover Menus 1–24.

How many MREs should you bring?

For a short trip, individual meals or a 4-pack can be easier to carry. For a group or a multi-day base camp, a 12-meal case or Case A & B bundle can be simpler to organize. Build your plan around the number of people, meals per day, and whether other food will be available.

Case A vs. Case B for outdoor use

Case A contains Menus 1–12 and Case B contains Menus 13–24. If you want the widest variety, the 24-meal Case A & B bundle combines both groups. Read our Case A vs. Case B guide for a quick breakdown.

Want to choose a specific meal?

If you do not want a random entrée, use our Choose Your MRE Meal page to select from current menu options individually.

Storage during a trip

Keep meals out of prolonged high heat whenever possible. Do not leave them sitting in direct sun or in an extremely hot vehicle for extended periods. Protect pouches from punctures, leaks, and moisture, and inspect the packaging before eating.

Best options by trip type

  • Day trip or vehicle kit: single meals or a 4-pack.
  • Weekend camping: 4-pack or 12-meal case depending on group size.
  • Hunting camp or field crew: full case or Case A & B bundle.
  • Large group or recurring use: multi-case supply or bulk quote.
